What you receive

Driving in Australia on a Brazilian licence

Each state sets its own rules. Here is what the licensing authorities say, and where our translation can and cannot be used.

What the state licensing authorities ask forVisiting: Transport for NSW lets temporary overseas visitors drive on a current overseas licence for up to six months and, if it is not in English, asks you to carry an English translation or an International Driving Permit. VicRoads lets you drive on your overseas licence if you will live in Victoria for less than six months, with a translation by a NAATI accredited translator or your country's consulate. Queensland asks you to carry a recognised English translation and show it to police with your licence. Moving or converting: VicRoads, Queensland and WA's Department of Transport accept translations by NAATI translators for a licence application. Transport for NSW does not: for a NSW licence it accepts translations only from Multicultural NSW or the Department of Home Affairs.
i
Moving to NSWUse Multicultural NSW or Home AffairsFor a NSW licence, whether you are transferring as a permanent resident or applying as a temporary visitor, Transport for NSW only accepts translations from Multicultural NSW or the Department of Home Affairs, so a private NAATI translation, including ours, will not be accepted. Our translation can still be used for driving in NSW as a visitor.
i
TestsExpect a knowledge and driving testBrazil is not on the recognised-country lists of Transport for NSW, VicRoads, Queensland or WA, so a Brazilian licence is converted only after a knowledge (theory) test and a practical driving test; VicRoads also sets a hazard perception test. Permanent residents must get a local licence within 3 months in NSW, Queensland and WA; VicRoads asks anyone who will live in Victoria for more than 6 months to convert.
i
Your cardPrinted card and CNH DigitalBrazil has issued the current green-and-yellow CNH model since 1 June 2022, and the CNH can be issued as a printed card, a digital licence, or both. The CNH Digital in the CNH do Brasil app (formerly the Carteira Digital de Trânsito) has the same legal validity in Brazil as the printed card. We translate both sides of the printed card, current or earlier model.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use your translation to transfer my licence in NSW?

No. For a NSW licence application, Transport for NSW only accepts translations from Multicultural NSW or the Department of Home Affairs, and it asks for the original translation document. Our NAATI translation is suited to driving in NSW as a visitor and to licence applications in states that accept NAATI translations, such as Victoria, Queensland and Western Australia.

My CNH says "Driver License" on it. Do I still need a translation?

The current CNH carries its title, and a key to the field names on the back, in Portuguese, English and Spanish, but the details themselves, such as your place of birth, parents' names and observations, are in Portuguese. NSW, Victoria and Queensland ask for a translation where a licence is not in English, and WA's Department of Transport says a licence from a non-recognised country that is in dual languages (English and another language) does not need one. Whether your card counts as English is the authority's decision, so if you are unsure, ask it before you order.

Can you translate my CNH Digital?

Yes, but please send the printed card if you have one. The CNH Digital has the same legal validity as the printed card in Brazil, but the Australian licensing pages we checked refer to your overseas licence and do not say whether a licence held only on a phone is accepted.

How long does the translation take?

Standard delivery for a driver licence is 2 to 3 business days. An urgent option ($100) is available at checkout.

Do I need an apostille on my Brazilian licence?

The NSW, Victorian, Queensland and WA licensing pages we checked ask for your original licence and an English translation, and do not mention legalisation or an apostille. Brazil has been a party to the Apostille Convention since 14 August 2016, so if another authority asks for one, it is obtained in Brazil. An apostille is translated as an extra page.

Can I get a printed copy?

Yes. The certified translation is always delivered as a PDF by email, and you can add a printed copy sent by post when you order.
