What you receive

Getting the right certificates from Brazil

Which certificates you need depends on your status in Brazil.

What Home Affairs asks for from BrazilFor visa applications, Home Affairs asks for a police certificate from each country where you spent 12 months or more in the past 10 years since turning 16, and accepts certificates issued in the 12 months before you apply. Its instructions for Brazil name the Certidão de Antecedentes Criminais, and the certificates you need depend on your residence status in Brazil.
i
Citizens and residentsFederal Justice and state certificates, for each stateIf you are Brazilian (including dual nationals), or held permanent or temporary residence in Brazil, Home Affairs asks for a Federal Justice (Justiça Federal) certificate and a State Justice certificate for each state where you lived for a total of 12 months or more in the past 10 years since turning 16. Federal Justice certificates are issued online, free of charge, by the regional federal court (TRF) covering that state.
i
State certificatesOnline in most statesDepending on the state, the certificate comes from the Justiça Estadual, Secretaria de Segurança Pública, Tribunal de Justiça or Polícia Civil. Most states issue it online with your RG number (RNE or RNM for foreigners). If you cannot get it online, Home Affairs says you may need to apply in person or give a power of attorney (procuração) to someone in Brazil.
i
Visitor visa holdersThe Polícia Federal certificateIf you lived in Brazil on a visitor (tourist) visa for 12 months or more in that period, Home Affairs asks for the Polícia Federal certificate instead. It is free, issued online at gov.br in Portuguese only, and valid for 90 days. If it cannot be issued online, for example because someone shares your name, the protocol number is taken to a Polícia Federal unit and the certificate is ready within 15 days.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Polícia Federal certificate enough on its own?

Not for Brazilian citizens or former permanent or temporary residents. Home Affairs' instructions for Brazil list Federal Justice and State Justice certificates for them, and the Polícia Federal certificate for people who lived in Brazil on a visitor (tourist) visa.

Do I need a military certificate as well?

Home Affairs asks Brazilian men over 18 for a colour scan of their military dispensation certificate (Certificado de Dispensa de Incorporação) if they were exempted from military service, or their reserve certificate (Certidão de Reservista) if they served and were discharged. We translate these at the same price per page.

How long does the translation take?

Standard delivery for a police certificate is 2 to 4 business days. You can choose 1–2 business days, or urgent within 24 hours, at checkout.

Do I need an apostille on my police certificate?

Home Affairs' instructions for Brazilian police certificates ask for the certificates and do not mention legalisation or an apostille. Brazil has been a party to the Apostille Convention since 14 August 2016; if another authority asks for one, apostilles are issued by authorised notary offices (cartórios), listed by Brazil's National Council of Justice. An apostille is translated as an extra page.

Can I get a printed copy?

Yes. The certified translation is always delivered as a PDF by email, and you can add a printed copy sent by post when you order.
