What you receive

Getting your certificate from Portugal

You can request it from Australia, and the purpose you state matters.

What Home Affairs asks for from PortugalFor visa applications, Home Affairs asks for a police certificate from each country where you spent 12 months or more in the past 10 years since turning 16, and accepts certificates issued in the 12 months before you apply. Its instructions for Portugal name the Certificado do Registo Criminal, issued by the Directorate-General for the Administration of Justice (DGAJ), and say people living outside Portugal, citizens or not, can apply online.
i
From AustraliaOnline, whatever your nationalityPortuguese citizens with a Citizen Card PIN or a Chave Móvel Digital can use Registo Criminal Online. Anyone else living outside Portugal fills in DGAJ's online request for residents abroad, signs it, and uploads their ID and proof of an address abroad. It is issued within 10 working days and sent by email. The fee is €5. You can also authorise someone in Portugal to apply for you.
i
PurposeState the purpose (finalidade)The purpose you give decides what the certificate shows. For a job or professional activity with no specific legal requirement, it shows only bans on working in that activity; for a purpose other than employment, it shows all current entries on your record. State the real purpose, such as an Australian visa application.
i
Valid 3 monthsTime it with your applicationPortugal gives the certificate a validity of 3 months from the date of issue, and the access code printed on it retrieves an updated version online during that time. Home Affairs accepts police certificates issued in the 12 months before you apply, so request it close to when you will lodge.

Frequently asked questions

Can someone in Portugal apply for me?

Yes. DGAJ accepts an application made in person by someone you authorise. They bring your signed declaration naming them and stating the purpose, their own ID, and your ID or a copy of it signed by you with the wording DGAJ specifies.

Does it show convictions from other countries?

The Portuguese criminal record holds convictions by Portuguese courts, and convictions of Portuguese citizens by foreign courts that were communicated to the Portuguese authorities. For other countries where you lived, Home Affairs asks for that country's own certificate.

How long does the translation take?

Standard delivery for a criminal record certificate is 2 to 4 business days. You can choose 1–2 business days, or urgent within 24 hours, at checkout.

Do I need an apostille on my criminal record certificate?

Home Affairs' instructions for Portuguese police certificates do not mention legalisation or an apostille. Portugal has been a party to the Apostille Convention since 4 February 1969; if another authority asks for one, it is issued by the Procurador-Geral da República, or by delegation the district prosecutors in Porto, Coimbra and Évora. An apostille is translated as an extra page.

Can I get a printed copy?

Yes. The certified translation is always delivered as a PDF by email, and you can add a printed copy sent by post when you order.
